Thinking Atlas is a participatory performance format in which a group of participants think in parallel. Around twenty people are seated at a shared table and given privacy microphones, which let them speak aloud without anyone else hearing them. Everyone receives the same question through headphones and answers it at the same time, so the room is full of speech that no one in it can hear.
The Thinking Atlas software transcribes each response and breaks it into individual claims. Every claim is placed on a single shared map according to how close it sits, in meaning, to everything else that has been said. The map is projected onto the table the group is gathered around, and it builds as the responses come in, settling into its final form when the round closes.
What the participants then read is the shape of their own collective thinking: regions where the room arrived at the same idea without coordinating, clusters that turn out to be smaller than expected, areas of the question that no one addressed, and single claims sitting alone at a distance from everything else.
The map becomes the starting point for the next round, so the group is not only analysing its thinking but building on it. Each round adds a layer, and the accumulated stack records how the room moved.
No language model interprets any of this. The system measures distance and shows it. The interpretation belongs to the room.
